Apple’s iPad2 shot to instant success when it was released last year, prompting a quick reply from competitors like Samsung. Apple’s success defined consumer expectations for what a tablet computer would look and feel like. Samsung has taken Apple’s template and added its own flavor to it; keeping the iPad2′s 10-inch display and glossy black bezel, but covering the rear of the device with a textured plastic and molded this grip to best fit your fingers when holding the tablet in landscape view.

Like1: It’s Lighter
Though noticeably longer than the iPad2, the Galaxy’s 16:9 screen makes it a good bit narrower than the iPad2. However the real reason the Tab feels so much lighter is the plastic back. The iPad2′s is all aluminum. When it comes to mobile devices, lighter is always better.
Like2: Flash that Works
Sure, I had to download and install Adobe Flash 10.3, but once I did, it worked perfectly. That’s a trick not even the iPad2 can accomplish.
Like3: The Screen
I have no issues with the iPad or iPad2 screen, but the Galaxy’s combination of higher resolution (1,280-by-800 versus the iPad’s 1,024-by-768) and 16:9 aspect ratio, 10.1-inch screen makes everything from games to videos look fantastic. I did, however, have to override the automatic brightness settings, which left the screen too dim for my tastes.
The bad: The lack of ports on the tablet will be a problem for some and the plastic back leaves it feeling less solid than the iPad 2, no mini-USB or microSD card slot, honeycomb app selection still trails iOS, camera quality isn’t great.
Overall
With Google’s Honeycomb in place, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v is an outstanding device for personal media and web consumption. There isn’t much Samsung can do about the sub-par app support for Android tablet so far (but this is bound to improve), though we do think not including HDMI or DLNA in the out-of-the-box experience is missing a trick, to say the least. On top of this, the lack of micro SD card support and a user-replaceable battery isn’t going to win favor from those who refuse to buy an iPad2 for the same reasons.
