Import AVCHD video to Final Cut Pro X to edit video

Lately I have been quite busy recording, editing and posting both HD video features such as reviews and top 10 lists as well as publishing gameplay clips from the latest gaming offerings.

Tips for recording a good audio
Learning how to record good audio is invaluable to the process of
making a video. Unfortunately, it is often an afterthought or considered
something that can be easily fixed in post production. Video producers
have had to learn the hard way that there is no substitution for
properly recorded audio.

1. Use a Quality Microphone
Microphones built in to camcorders are generally low quality. They don't always pick up sound well, and sometimes you'll end up hearing the sound of the camcorder operating.
If possible, use an external microphone whenever you're shooting videos. A lavaliere, or lapel mic, like the type newscasters use, is unobtrusive and especially helpful if you want to hear someone's voice clearly.
2. Monitor the Sound

Try to make a interview record with 8 steps
An interview is a conversation between two people (the interviewer and the interviewee) where questions are asked by the interviewer to obtain information from the interviewee. Do you want to record it when you take a interview?
Here are the steps:
1. Schedule the video interview.
I ask the author to block 30 minutes for the call. (If everything is working on both ends, we should be done in 15 minutes.) I confirm that they have Skype installed and ask for their Skype username. I then put the call on my calendar and include their Skype username in the notes.
2. Prepare for the interview. Since I am interviewing authors, this means reading their book. I highlight and mark it as I go. Then, when I’m done, I type out a list of 5–7 questions. I then display these questions in a text editor directly under my webcam.
3. Send the questions to the author. Some authors prefer to respond live, without preparation. (This is actually my preference when I am interviewed.) Others want to prepare. Regardless, I send the questions with a page reference for the answer next to each question. I want the author to know what I am referencing. I also confirm the call time.
4. Call the author using Skype. I then use Call Recorder for Skype to actually record the video and audio. My preference settings, accessed from within the Skype Preference panel, are set as follows:
Notice that I have the Recording Options: Record Video set to "Split Screen."
5. Record the video interview. Make sure you are both ready, and then click the record button on Call Recorder. Try to look into the webcam as much as possible, though you’ll be tempted to look at the image of the person you are interviewing. When you are finished, turn the recorder off. The call will be saved in the folder you designated under your preference settings.
6. Edit the video with your favorite editor. You can use something as simple as QuickTime Pro. I use iMovie. I generally don’t edit anything within the body of the video itself. I simply trim off the beginning (when we are getting setup) and the end. I also insert a video intro and outro at the beginning and the end. I had these professionally created by Duarte Design. I use a simple cross-fade transition between each element.
7. Upload to your favorite video sharing site. I upload directly to YouTube from within iMovie. You can also upload to Vimeo or even Facebook. I set the video to "Make this movie personal." I want to double-check it on the YouTube site before going live to the world. (Once I am happy with the meta-data and thumbnail, I flip the settings on YouTube to "Public.")
8. Embed a link to the video into your blog. This will vary, depending on your blogging platform and the software you use to access it. I do mine with a code from within MarsEdit, my blogging software. I have the embed code mapped to a single keystroke. I also write a brief post around the video, introducing it, and including the questions I asked the author. I find that this helps draw people into the video itself.
In addition to this, I send a "preview link" of the post to the author before I go live with it. (I do this with WordPress using a plugin called Public Post Preview. This enables me to give a link to them for public preview of a post before it is published.
All in all, this is pretty straight-forward process. It creates some variety in my content delivery and gives my readers a perspective they might not otherwise get.

When Christmas comes around, he decides to dress as Santa Claus and steal their presents and thus prevent Christmas from coming. The graceful Cindy Lou Who attempts to charm him into joining the joyous festivities instead.

The most renowned Christmas character - outside of Santa Claus himself - is convincingly played by Carrey. He is every bit as grumpy and miserly as we come to expect from Scrooge. But the most impressive aspect of Carrey's performance is how he can interact with himself so convincingly, playing Scrooge and the haunting ghosts in conversation with staggering ease.
Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, Michael J. Fox and Gary Oldman also feature, which would usually lead to a description of an all-star cast, but in this case Carrey's large workload takes over in a virtual one man show. Perhaps a more talented voice actor than Carrey would have been beneficial, as he is known for being an exuberant and physical comedian, but any qualms are forgotten when the action gets going.

How to adjust focus on Digital Cameras to get a better photo
Digital Cameras present photographers with an ever increasing array of Automatic and Semi Automatic shooting modes. Most of these center around different ways of exposing your shots – however many cameras also give options for different focusing modes (auto, continuous focusing for moving subjects and manual).

Step 1 - Compose Your Shot
First you want to compose your shot so that it looks pleasing to the eye. In photography the rule of thirds will help you to compose a pleasing shot. Look through the viewfinder of the camera or the screen on the back of the camera to take a look at what the picture will look like once it's taken.
Composing a shot might be difficult at first, however over time you will find that this becomes much more like second nature. You really shouldn't have any problem composing attractive shots.
Step 2 - Think About Focus
Now you need to choose the subject of your photo, this is the thing that you want to stand out in front of the background. If you are taking a photo of a person then this will normally be the subject of your photo, however this isn't always the case.
Step 3 - Locking Focus
To lock the focus you need to move the camera and aim it directly at the subject of your photo, don't worry about the composition of the photo at this stage. You need to make sure that the subject is in the centre of the screen. Then you can press the shutter down, but only press it half way. You will hear your cameras focus adjust and it will beep signaling that it's ready. Now you must keep your finger pressed half way on this button.
By keeping the button pressed halfway down you are preventing the camera from focusing again. This locks the focus to whatever it is you want to take a picture of. The subject of your photo will be focused clearly and this will be sharp.
Step 4 - Composition
Once you have locked the focus you then need to move the camera back so that your composition is visible again. Take your time doing this to get it just right. However, make sure that you never take your finger off the shutter.
Step 5 - Taking the Photo
Now all that's left to do is fully depress the shutter button and take the shot. This should create photos with sharp detailed subjects and slightly blurred backgrounds.

DV & HDVThe DV format was designed to store digital video onto magnetic tape. HDV refers to the high definition version of the DV format. DV and HDV files are very memory intensive but produce very quality video. Given the drop in tape-based camcorder sales, fewer consumers need to worry about DV and HDV, but it does remain popular among enthusiasts.
MPEG-2: Many standard definition camcorders record in MPEG-2. It's also used in high definition camcorders, although not as often. It's a very high quality digital format, the same used in the DVD movies produced by Hollywood studios. That gives MPEG-2 based camcorders a nice advantage over other formats: the video is easily burned to a DVD and most computer media players (like Apple QuickTime and Windows Media Player) support MPEG-2 playback.
MPEG-2 is more commonly found in traditional camcorders that are pricier and higher quality than pocket camcorder models. This is, in part, because MPEG-2 video files are larger in size than other formats and thus not as easy to upload to the Web or send in an email. If you're more interested in viewing high quality, standard definition camcorder footage on a TV, an MPEG-2-based model is a fine choice.
MPEG-4/H.264:Found on most pocket camcorders like the Flip and in many higher-end HD camcorders, MPEG-4/H.264 is actually a very broad family of different formats supporting both standard and high definition video recording. There are several virtues to H.264: it can record very high quality video yet compress it in such a way so as not to consume too much memory. Camcorder makers use the H.264 if they want to offer a "Web-friendly" video product.
AVCHD: A variant of the H.264 format, this is a high definition video file format found on most Canon, Sony, and Panasonic HD camcorders (other manufacturers support it as well). AVCHD camcorders can capture very high quality video and they can also burn HD video to a standard DVD disc, which can be played back on a Blu-ray disc player. Learn more about the AVCHD format here.
Pros: These models shoot high-def video that's easy to edit; the media is cheap.
Cons: They're expensive--HDV camcorders cost two to three times as much as MiniDV ones.
Best for: Makers of high-def home movies and lovers of HDTV.

Review of Panasonic camcorder of Lumix DMC-FZ150
Panasonic rethinks their high-end ultrazoom, returning the flagship to five-star status with a reduction in resolution that paradoxically boosts image quality. Easy to recommend.
The advantages of bridge cameras are many. They handle like an SLR, yet give you a huge zoom range without the bulk and cost. And compared to most compacts there’s a greater range of control.
So it is with the FZ150. The zoom is longer, at 24x, than most compacts can offer, giving a huge range of 25mm to 600mm (35mm equivalent).
Aperture and shutter priority, full manual and program modes give you plenty of control, and it’s packed with SLR-style dials, knobs and buttons. A mode dial on top helps you flick between settings quickly, there’s a thumb wheel for adjusting settings such as aperture, and a dedicated movie button.
It captures RAW and JPEG images at 12.1 megapixels, and video at 1080p and 50fps in either AVCHD or MP4 format, and it sports a 202kpixel electronic viewfinder as well as a 3in fully articulated screen. Impressively, there’s also a hotshoe for mounting a flash, and a 2.5mm jack for connecting an external microphone.
The half-inch sensor can’t match an SLR’s for size and light-capturing capabilities, but responsiveness and performance is very good. We measured a shutter lag of 0.4 seconds and shot-to-shot performance at 0.8 seconds – as good as any compact we’ve seen before. Even with the flash on, that only drops to one second between shots, and in burst mode you can shoot 12 shots at full resolution in a second.
And quality, despite the small sensor, is stunningly good. At full zoom and full wide, shots look sharp across the board, with no fringing or distortion. Automatic exposures were consistently expertly judged and colours perfectly balanced. In low light, even at ISO 3200 noise is remarkably well controlled, although some detail is inevitably lost as the camera’s noise reduction routines battle to produce clean images.
In video mode, it’s even better. The Active Power OIS image stabilisation system works brilliantly to smooth out hand shake, to the extent that it’s even possible to walk while shooting without producing jittery footage. Autofocus is fast and the zoom motor, while just about audible in a quiet room, is silent in most everyday situations.
The quality of footage is surprisingly clean in low light, near-flawless in good light, and audio from the built in stereo microphones is excellent. An option on the mode dial, meanwhile, allows you to use the camera in aperture and shutter priority, program and full manual, and adjust the ISO sensitivity. You can’t make changes while shooting, though.
All in all, the new top-end bridge camera from Panasonic is a triumph. It’s the fastest camera of its type we’ve ever tested, and faster than any compact we’ve ever looked at. It’s stuffed with controls and features, and it produces excellent quality stills. The price might seem a little high at the outset, but when you consider you’re getting video quality to rival the best single-sensor camcorders, as well as a 600mm zoom lens, it suddenly looks an absolute steal.
To end on a positive, if you don’t want the perceived ‘hassle’ of a DSLR and swapping lenses and a big zoom is really top of your priority list, then the FZ150 handles well, takes good quality stills and video and offers the flexibility that a pocket compact doesn’t. It’s one camera capable of handling many jobs and is such is a good all rounder if you can shop around to find a more competitive price.
